SEPTEMBER 30, 2025                                 SUPERMARKETS ARE POISONING US

Bioengineered (BE) foods, particularly those engineered for herbicide resistance, can contain man-made chemicals, such as glyphosate, which are applied during cultivation and may leave residues in the final product. While the genetic modification itself isn't a chemical process, the agricultural practices associated with many BE crops, such as the widespread use of herbicides like glyphosate on herbicide-tolerant varieties, can lead to the presence of these man-made chemicals in the food.

How man-made chemicals enter bioengineered food

Many bioengineered crops are engineered to tolerate specific herbicides, allowing farmers to spray these chemicals over the entire field to kill weeds without harming the crop.

Herbicide residues:

The herbicide is applied to the crop, and when it's harvested and processed, measurable quantities of the chemical can remain as residues on or in the food product.

Highly refined ingredients:

Even if the modified genetic material is no longer detectable in highly processed ingredients like corn oil or soy lecithin, these ingredients can still carry residues of man-made chemicals used in their production.

Examples and concerns

  • Glyphosate:

A widely used herbicide, glyphosate is often applied to bioengineered corn and soy crops. It has been classified as "probably carcinogenic" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)

  • Concentrated use:

The practice of using herbicides resistant to bioengineered crops can result in a significant increase in the amount of these chemicals sprayed on agricultural fields.

In summary, the bioengineering process itself doesn't add chemicals, but the way many bioengineered crops are cultivated often involves the use of man-made herbicides, leading to chemical residues in the harvested food.

Where to Buy

No food store entirely avoids bioengineered (BE) foods, but stores like Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, ALDI, and Sprouts prioritize them by offering large selections of certified organic and Non-GMO Project Verified products, and having store-brand items formulated to exclude BE ingredients. To definitively avoid BE foods, look for the USDA Organic seal or the Non-GMO Project Verified butterfly logo on product labels, as these certifications prohibit GMOs and require third-party verification.

To avoid bioengineered (BE) or genetically modified (GM) foods, look for the USDA Organic Seal or the Non-GMO Project Verified seal on labels, buy from local farmers' markets, and choose whole, unprocessed foods over processed products with a high risk of containing BE ingredients like corn, soy, and canola oil. Reading ingredient lists carefully and seeking out products explicitly labeled "Non-GMO" or "GMO-free" also helps avoid these foods.
